Should You Go Out-of-Network?

If you’ve never worked with an out-of-network provider before, it can feel unfamiliar. But many clients are surprised to learn how often it’s done, and how manageable it can be with the right support.

Here’s a more detailed look at the pros and cons of going out-of-network for therapy...

Pros

More Choice in Who You Work With

You're not limited to the list of in-network providers. That means you can choose someone based on experience, fit, and approach rather than who accepts your insurance.

More Privacy and Control

When you go out-of-network, your insurance company isn't involved in approving or reviewing your treatment. That means fewer hoops to jump through and more privacy. Your diagnosis, session notes, and treatment plan stay between you and your therapist.

Flexible Care

Insurance companies often have rigid requirements around what therapy should look like: how long, how often, and what "counts" as a covered concern. Out-of-network work gives us the freedom to create a treatment plan based on what works for you, rather than what's already been pre-approved.

Partial Reimbursement is Often Available

Many insurance plans offer 50–90% reimbursement once you've met your out-of-network deductible. I'll provide a simple document (called a superbill) you can submit to your insurance to get started.

Cons and What To Know

You Pay Upfront

You'll pay the full fee at the time of each session. However, if you're eligible for reimbursement, that money often comes back to you.

You'll Need to Submit a Claim

Getting reimbursed does involve a bit of extra effort, typically submitting a form along with the superbill I provide. I'm happy to help you get started or walk you through it during our consultation.

You May Need to Meet a Deductible First

Most plans require you to meet an out-of-network deductible before they begin reimbursing. It's worth checking how close you are to that amount, since many people find they're closer than they think, especially mid-way through the year.

If you're curious about whether this route makes sense for you, I'm happy to walk you through your options in a free consultation.
