About John Monopoli, PhD
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working in a wide variety of settings, including community mental health, college counseling, psychology department clinics, and private practice. I’ve worked with individuals dealing with all kinds of struggles and developed the ability to listen and understand without making assumptions.
I also bring something else to the room: a lived understanding of what it’s like to make sense of adulthood, relationships, career, and identity. Like many of the people I work with, I’ve moved through seasons of ambition, doubt, pressure, and growth. While your story is uniquely yours, I’m familiar with the terrain. That shared understanding helps us connect more quickly and meaningfully.
I have deep connections to the places that have shaped different seasons of my life:
- Upstate New York (Binghamton and Buffalo): Where I grew up and completed a portion of my professional training.
- Philadelphia, PA: Where my wife and I met and began our professional lives. This city holds a special place in my heart.
- Athens, OH: Where I began my training and completed my doctoral program.
- Washington, D.C.: Where I completed my capstone training and gained meaningful insight into the work I do today.
- Central Pennsylvania: Where I attended Dickinson College (Class of 2011) and where we are now raising our family.
Whatever brings you here, you deserve support from someone who understands where you’re coming from and knows how to help you move toward real, meaningful change. Here’s a little bit more about me and my experience.

Personal
The things that keep me grounded include running, reading, watching sports, and cooking Italian food, especially for the people I care about. These days, I spend most of my time outside of work with my wife and our two sons.
I believe that who we are outside the therapy room matters just as much as what we bring into it. My hope is that you feel supported by my training and experience, as well as, who I am as a person.
